Samsung introduced its new 3D Odyssey Monitor series at Gamescom 2024, bringing a fresh perspective to the gaming world. The company’s latest gaming monitors feature eye-tracking technology and 3D capabilities, allowing users to experience 2D images in 3D without needing glasses. This new series is particularly appealing to gamers who are interested in 3D gaming but have hesitated to adopt the technology.
The Odyssey 3D marks Samsung’s first venture into 3D gaming monitors, set to launch globally later this year. The company highlights that these monitors allow users to easily switch between 2D and 3D modes. The Odyssey 3D will be available in 27 and 37-inch models, featuring a 4K QLED panel with a 165Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, and AMD FreeSync support. Connectivity options include one DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.1 ports. Additionally, the monitors come with a tilt-adjustable, height-adjustable stand to ensure the best 3D experience.
Samsung integrates eye-tracking technology into the 3D Odyssey monitor with a lenticular lens, which directs different images to each eye through specialized hardware. An internal camera tracks eye movements, continuously optimizing depth perception. This technology is similar to the system used in Acer’s SpatialLabs laptops and monitors. However, it can only be used by one person at a time, which is generally not an issue for solo gamers.
The price of the monitors has not yet been officially announced. However, considering Samsung’s previous Odyssey series and comparable products from Acer, the Odyssey 3D series is expected to come with a high price tag.
