Gemini vs ChatGPT: Which One is Better?

Google has made a big splash with Gemini. We are witnessing the emergence of a new technology giant on the stage. On the other side, we have ChatGPT, which has been dominating the industry for the past few years. So, is Gemini on par with its biggest competitor? Let’s explore this together in this article. We will learn with Gemini vs ChatGPT.

Bard, offered to internet users by Google, has been renamed Gemini. But is it advanced enough to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, or does ChatGPT still reign supreme?

Google recently announced its latest endeavor to dethrone the king of productive AI chatbots, ChatGPT. Renamed as Gemini, formerly known as Bard, this initiative was launched in early 2023, following the groundbreaking release of OpenAI’s LLM-powered chat interface, seemingly aiming to close the gap…

Gemini, thanks to its integration with Google’s search technology, has had access to the internet since day one. Meanwhile, the launch version of ChatGPT was limited to the information it was fed during training. However, OpenAI quickly expanded ChatGPT’s capabilities by establishing connections with Microsoft’s Bing, allowing access to linked and external information.

Despite the connection, there has always been a consensus that ChatGPT is more useful for a broader range of natural language processing tasks. Now, Google is pulling out all the stops, rebranding Bard with the name of the underlying language model and offering access to its enhanced service through a competitively priced subscription model aimed at competing with ChatGPT.

Gemini vs ChatGPT

In comparing Gemini and ChatGPT, we will examine them in several different areas to understand which one excels in each.

Information Retrieval

One advantage of Gemini is its ability to access all information at its fingertips by default, including the internet, Google’s vast knowledge graph, and training data. On the other hand, ChatGPT will typically attempt to answer a question based only on its training data.

This can sometimes result in outdated information. However, you can overcome this by prompting it to search the web for the latest and most up-to-date data. Still, Gemini introduces an additional step that actually demonstrates its usefulness when needed.

Based on my experience using both platforms, Gemini has proven to be “a bit more adept” than ChatGPT in online search and integrating the information it finds into its responses.

And the winner… Let’s call it a tie in a scenario where Gemini excels in generating answers from online texts, and ChatGPT performs better in queries unrelated to the internet.

Language Models

Firstly, it is worth noting that both Gemini and ChatGPT are built on incredibly advanced, extensive, and powerful Large Language Models (LLMs) that surpass anything publicly available in the past.

Keep in mind, ChatGPT is the interface through which users interact with the GPT4 (for ChatGPT Pro users) or GPT3.5 (for free users) language model. In Google’s case, the interface is referred to as Gemini (formerly Bard), which is used to communicate with a separate entity known as the Gemini language model (or Gemini Ultra if you are paying for the Gemini Advanced service).

An important point to consider is that, despite both being called chatbots, the intended user experience is somewhat different. ChatGPT is designed to facilitate dialogue akin to conversing with an expert on a subject and assist in problem-solving through conversation.

On the other hand, Gemini appears to be designed to process information and automate tasks to save users time and effort. From a technical perspective, the power of LLM models is typically measured by the number of parameters (trainable values) within the neural network. It has been reported that GPT4’s networks contain approximately one trillion parameters, but no concrete information is available about the number of parameters used by Gemini. However, this may not be crucial, as knowing that both are “very powerful” could be sufficient.

And the winner is… After using both for various conversations on different topics for a while, it is evident that, thanks to the grunt provided by GPT-4, ChatGPT still has the stronger conversational interface. However, Gemini is closing the gap!

Multi-Modal Capabilities

Multi-modal artificial intelligences are those capable of processing multiple types of data. The initial versions of ChatGPT only read and generated text. However, since OpenAI upgraded its “engine” to GPT-4, it gained the ability to process visual and auditory data, thus making it multi-modal. On the other hand, Gemini was multi-modal out of the box (though not all features were immediately enabled).

ChatGPT generates images using the DALL-E model developed by OpenAI, while Gemini utilizes Google’s Imagen 2 engine. Both are undeniably powerful and can yield impressive results. However, when compared on the same prompt, ChatGPT tends to be more consistent in generating images closely matching the desired output.

There’s no doubt that ChatGPT’s superior conversational abilities provide it with significant advantages here. If you’re unsure about what your code should do or the best way to integrate it, creating clear and helpful guidance and offering suggestions and tips would be better.

And the winner is… ChatGPT. While Gemini excels in creating better photorealism, when it comes to generating images closely matching the user’s requests, ChatGPT takes the lead. While Gemini may seem slightly better at technical code generation, it can’t compete with ChatGPT as a conversational interface to be used during creation and experimentation.

Which One is Better: Gemini vs ChatGPT?

Actually, neither is perfect. Both still suffer from hallucinations and often provide incorrect information… For example, Gemini can sometimes claim that it doesn’t use OpenAI’s DALL-E 2‘s diffusion model technology.

ChatGPT, on the other hand, may say that Gemini doesn’t have the ability to generate images . There is a problem with the data, as it is based on a certain period of time. Therefore, they can miss some developments. Still, if you’re only going to subscribe to one, opting for ChatGPT Pro right now seems natural.
